Johann Gottfried Dörfell 1793 Violin

Violin labelled "Johann Gottfried Dörfell… 1793" with illegible German writing between the name and the date.

One-piece back, 14 1/8 (356 mil). Plain back with intentional ornamental grooves in the 4 corners. No purfling. Partially carved scroll. Plain ribs and scroll, belly of fine to medium grain with intentional ornamental grooves in the 4 corners, as on the back, but fainter due to wear. Dark brown varnish.

The Dörfell family from Graslitz in Bohemia, took up residence in Klingenthal, Saxony in the late 17th century. All members of the family were regarded as good instrument makers.
